Upgrading to Server 2008 from Server 2003

Gosia GrabowskaIf you haven't upgraded from Server 2003 to Server 2008 -- here's the how-to you've been waiting for. Today I'm going to show you how to prepare for a server upgrade and how to perform it. I'll also tell you why you need to upgrade your server to 2008; let's start with that.

Why upgrade anyway?

One of the main reasons why you would want to upgrade all of your servers on your network from Server 2003 to Server 2008 is the 2008 Functional Level. Well, that's great but what does that really mean?

Once you upgrade all your servers and get the 2008 Functional Level you will get a few bonuses:

1. The first bonus for upgrading to Server 2008 is Distributed File System Replication. What it means in English is that exchange of information between your Domain Controllers is a lot smoother.

2. Second bonus is Advanced Encryption Standard support for the Kerberos protocol - logins are a lot more secure.

3. The third bonus is Last Interactive Logon Information. This is a Group Policy Object that will display information about previous logons while you are trying to login yourself. So basically, you are going to be able to see who has logged on to the machine before you.

Installing WordPress on IIS 7

Dave LawlorIn the past few weeks I have been writing a lot about using open source software such as PHP and MySQL on IIS7 to get you ready for today.

This article will take the knowledge and experience of those articles and apply them to install one of the most popular open source blogging and CMS software products: WordPress.

In Part 1 I will show you step-by-step how to install WordPress on IIS 7.

We'll go over downloading and uploading WordPress to your server, configuring MySQL and setting up a MySQL database for WordPress (using both phpMyAdmin and MySQL command line), and lastly we'll run the WordPress install script.

In Part 2 I'll show you how to enhance and optimize your basic WordPress install.

We'll learn how to set up search engine friendly URLs to increase your SEO, how to take advantage of the many WordPress plugins, and how set up IIS Authentication for WordPress.

Ballmer "Announces" New Microsoft Initiatives

Brian NelsonRunning a more subtle playbook in times past, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer made a pseudo-announcement ahead of the Professional Developer Conference by dropping newsworthy information into seemingly standard interviews.

In doing so, Mr. Ballmer took advantage of the blogging universe’s "report anything" standard to spread the word about upcoming Microsoft services without having to actually commit to anything substantial.

Still, these intentional "leaks" give some insight into the coming months at Redmond.

Cloud Computing Operating System

One of the more interesting statements from Ballmer was that Microsoft will soon launch a "cloud operating system" that will run .NET applications.

The cloud operating system has nothing to do with Windows 7 or any sort of patch/upgrade for the much criticized Windows Vista operating system. As with most leaks, there were not too many details, but he did mention it would probably be called "Windows something." Go go Gadget-Creativity!
