Install MySQL on IIS7 Server 2008
Now
that you have installed PHP on your server, most of the popular PHP applications
like WordPress & Joomla will require a database on the backend to support them.
While there are other options, MySQL is usually the database of choice to use
for these applications. It is one of the most widely supported databases so you
can usually find help if you run into a snag.
In this article we will install MySQL 5 on a Windows Server 2008 running IIS7.
We'll go through all of the necessary steps to installing this powerful database
on your server. MySQL gives you quite a few options for some great open source
apps when combined with PHP and other programming languages.
Let's begin with the installation so that you can start taking full advantage of
MySQL.

The Future of Computing -- Part 2: TouchSmart PC & Windows 7
In
the first part of The Future of Computing I talked about OLEDs, LEPs, and OLEs
and their role in the future of personal computing.
In the second edition of The Future of Computing I want to discuss the direction
of the personal computer and what that means for you.
I think there is one key word that hardware and software companies are focusing
on and that word is: Integration.
The personal computer is slowly infiltrating its way into our televisions,
kitchens, living rooms and our entire homes. At least, that's what many
companies are planning on.
Has anyone besides me worked as a waiter or a waitress (obviously I'm a dude so I didn't work as a waitress) for a restaurant chain?
If you have, you may not be all that impressed with the HP TouchSmart PC because you've used a touch screen monitor to enter in orders.
The good thing is that the TouchSmart is going to perform quite a bit better than the typical restaurant touch screen with the Squirrel order entry system.

Virtually a Reality -- Virtualization in the IT World
Do any of you recall the sci-fi flick, "Total Recall," starring Arnold
Schwarzenegger?
Back in 1990, I thought it was one of the most awesome movies of the day, and
was enraptured by the concept that one could have memories implanted into their
mind. As the movie progressed, you never knew if he was actually living the
"vacation as a spy," or just having memories of it.
Today, my son partakes in online games where about half-a-dozen of his friends
are playing the same game as a team, separated by dozens of miles and speaking
to each other by headset, as they take on other teams from across the country.
If you're willing to part with 400 bucks, you can own a wrap-around set of eye
glasses that will purportedly plunge you into the depths of games like Quake 4,
Halo 3, Final Fantasy XI, multiple versions of Call of Duty ... and the list
goes on.
Testimony of some who've used it state that all you see from east to west is
this gaming world. Amazing!
The beauty of all this technology, as it applies to us in the IT world, is that
we can also partake in the Virtual experience. And, it doesn’t have to cost us
much money at all.
