A Virtual LAN, commonly known as a VLAN, allows communication regardless of physical location. VLANS can even extend across Wide Area Networks (WANs), since network reconfiguration is done through software instead of the physical devices. VLANs also allow for scalability, superior security, and improved network management.
 
All this and more makes VLANs the coolest LANs out there. So let’s get started with this awesome technology!

In this article I’ll explain some basic concepts behind VLAN operation on Cisco catalyst switches. I’ll also show you how to configure, verify and troubleshoot your very own VLAN.
