In this CompTIA Network+ Training video, we’ll go over Repeaters and Hubs. Before we start, it’s important to note that repeaters and hubs do not have a specific look to them.
All network signals will deteriorate or attenuate eventually. If they have to travel too far, that’s where repeaters come in. Repeaters are used to help deal with attenuation issues by taking in a signal on one port and retransmitting it out on another. Repeaters work at level one (the physical layer) of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model.
Hubs on the other hand, are essentially multi-port repeaters. Hubs, like repeaters, work at layer one of the OSI model. Hubs take a signal in on one port and forward it out to all other ports on the hub. You might see or use a hub when working with a network using the star topology; the central connection point in a star topology is generally a hub.
