The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) needs to determine the root bridge (or root switch) for every Virtual LAN (VLAN) on the network. The problem is, every switch on your network will automatically assume it is the root bridge for every Virtual LAN on your network. Because of this, there needs to be an election process to figure out the actual root bridge to be used for each Virtual LAN.
In this Cisco CCNA training video, you’ll learn about root bridges (or root switches), the root bridge election process, and a short introduction about how switches use Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDUs) to determine which switch will be used as the root bridge.
