I think this is a graphical representation of what can be done with a concept and some personal drive. A length and value comparison chart like this with Vmware and Citrix.
I say good for Bill Gates for becoming a billionaire when he was young enough to enjoy it! It’s funny he reminds me a ton of Mark Zuckerburg. Both did whatever it took to become the biggest and the best. And when they were 20 years old with nothing to lose, it was no big deal to borrow code/design whatever. It’s not like anyone cared then anyways. Then when their industries became huge they were embroiled in lawsuits.
Microsoft will always be king of the desktop and server products. and let’s not forget all the IT tech that have a job because of Microsoft. I like apple but they will never be able do what Microsoft has done over the years.
Interesting to see that Windows 7 has already outsold Vista. Not surprising, I guess, but a lot faster than I would have expected.
I think that it’s interesting that Apple is becoming more valuable than Microsoft. Microsoft is going to have to come up with some serious innovation, Windows 7 was a good start but they’ll need to step up their game heading into the future. How about only 2 million Zune’s being sold to date, wow. Apple is killing them in the personal MP3 market too! For me, I’m still sticking with Microsoft, I’m a Win 7 user and I don’t own a Mac. I do own several iPods, and an iPad is on the horizon. Great post!
A history of Microsoft and there is no mention of Office? And where are the development tools and server products (NT, SQL, Exchange)? They warrant more attention than how much Zune sold.
And why does revenue only go back to 2001? Showing revenue since 1986 would be a good comparison to the stock price.

Where is Microsoft OS/2 ?!
MD-DOS?
Maybe MS-DOS?
Greg W. Stuart, don’t forget that Apple is selling HARDWARE(macbooks, workstations, mp3s, phones, TVs, etc.) with its software, while MS had only X BOX from hardware that can boast with considerable results. 1 iPhone 4g is worth several copies of Windows 7 home premium.
Great scheme, but why there is no info about NT? There is XBOX, but no Office and etc.
To me the MS story is really about “the deal”. Step back in time when the young kids from MS went to visit Big Blue…striking a deal for a lowly little operating system that just runs in e background. The seemingly modest unit cost looked like a “no big deal” line item cost to the folks who made their claim to fame with Main Frame and Mini Computing – after all – who mere pedestrian type mortal would want a computer in their life.
From my perspective – Gates and Jobs were good for each other. The Love / Hate relationship pushed them an their respective trajectories and we the end users are all the better for it. This comment doesn’t overlook the open source people who are pushing the edge via the cathedral and the bazaar.
But as I look at MS today i think of big companies that ran up to the edge…still enjyoing the big revenues from their toil…dealing that their would was beginning to unravel. Think IBM just before Gerstner arrived. Think GM before that unpopular life extension came down from the Feds and gave them life support – saving millions of jods and helping untold numbers of households to start viable.
MS is in trouble today. The change on the put side is moving faster than their efforts on the inside. They are are all twisted up in their knickers and need tonright the ship. As a shareholder…of apple and MS…I want to see them pull the nose of the plane up…up into a trajectory that will save the company and once again produce new ideas that are commercialized and a success.
As a side note, think of the steel industry in the 1970-80 period…the big integrated mills struggled as the rust set in. They did everything for everybody and the shear weight of the mass brought them down. Along comes the mini mills, light, lean and nimble. The mini’s have taken off, done well and thrived with the game changing business model. So now…moving from steel back to software code…MS with it’s big integrated product line…some products playing in spaces that go against the core of other product lines…meets the competitive landscape shape by new devices (iPads) and new applications (app store) that are much like a bulldozer that pushes and shapes the earth in such a way that the landscape is never again the same.
Shed ballmer. Find the next Gerstner. Right the ship.
vista and 7 are really sucks!
1999 is the golden age.
If Microsoft doesn’t adapt to the current shifts in technology, the next 10 years will be a downward spiral. The Internet didn’t have a profound affect until the last 2-3 years on businesses, global country defense/military, financial institutions and educational institutions. The tidal shift is already happening. Adaptation will be vital. Apple and Google could definitely unseat Microsoft if it is not flexibly adaptive and rest on its laurels. Mobile and Virtualization technology will unseat the current infrastructure and reliance on per laptop, per desktop solutions.
