The most fun I’ve ever had doing an interview was at this year’s TechEd when I got a chance to talk with Jen & Sean McCown, the famous Midnight DBAs.
Jen and Sean are two amazing SQL Server experts who have a passion for teaching and a knack for making SQL fun. They have tons of experience in both administration and development and Sean is a SQL Server MVP, contributing editor at InfoWorld Magazine and writer for NetworkWorld.
In their spare time, which happens to be right around midnight, Jen and Sean offer themselves to the SQL community by providing video tutorials on anything from performing database backups, utilizing PowerShell in SQL, and performance monitoring to using SSIS, T-SQL and much, much more. Their video tutorials and short midnight snacks are an invaluable resource to anyone who wants to master SQL Server.
Both Sean and Jen are also very active in the social space and you can easily connect with them on Twitter and this fun Facebook page that pays an homage to Sean’s flowing locks. Jen’s blog is SQL Awesomesauce and Sean’s is the DBA Rant. They also have a YouTube page and you can get their podcasts on iTunes. In addition, Jen and Sean have recently started writing for Petri providing SQL tutorials on installing, managing, and troubleshooting SQL Server databases.

When I got to meet the Midnight DBAs at TechEd we talked about how they got into SQL and their favorite features in SQL Server 2008 R2. In the video Jen and Sean also offer some great advice on how those new to databases can break into the field and become DBAs.
