Jennifer Huber Wireless CCIE

Interview with Jennifer Huber, Wireless Mobility Solutions Expert

Going in to Cisco Live 2011, I was excited to meet Jennifer Huber, a Systems Engineer from Austin specializing in wireless networking. I’ve heard so many great things about Jennifer and her mission to become a wireless CCIE, that I knew we’d have plenty to talk about.

Jennifer runs her popular blog Wireless CCIE, here I come! where she shares her experiences with preparing for the CCIE wireless certification and is a delegate for the Gestalt IT Wireless Tech Field Day. She’s also very active on Twitter; you can connect with her at @JenniferLucille.

Unfortunately, because of the busy conference schedule (and because I was only in Vegas for the first two days of the conference) we didn’t get a chance to meet in person. But we did get to chat through email and I today I’d like to share what Jennifer had to say.

Q. What’s new and exciting at Cisco Live this year?

A. Cisco FlexConnect (formerly known as H-REAP) announced the ability to support a remote site deployment of 50 APs and a max of 1000 client devices. The remote site must have at least a 1.44Mbps link with a maximum WAN RTT Latency of 100ms to support data & voice and a maximum WAN RTT Latency of 300ms to support data only.

Cisco’s WCS version 7.2 converges acess management for wired and wireless networks and is renamed Cisco Prime Network Control System. NCS scales to support up to 25k devices, a 64-bit architecture and is available as an appliance. It will support IPv6 mobility via IPv6 client bridging to start with, then additional advances will be expected to be released at the top of 2012.

Q. What should Cisco professionals be paying attention to in 2011?

A. Cisco’s 4400 wireless LAN controllers and WiSM-1 controllers will no longer be supported after software code version 7.0 — the time to upgrade your hardware is now!

Q. How did you get started on your path to becoming a CCIE?

I’ve been in IT for over 10 years now, and the majority of that has been working with Cisco wireless infrastructures. I haven’t passed the lab yet — it is an incredibly hard test — I’ve tried a couple of times, but I’m not about to give up!

Q. What’s next for you? Any projects or events you’d like to talk about?

I’ve started planning the next Wireless Tech Field day with Stephen Foskett of Gestalt IT. The event will be in early 2012, but the specific date has not yet been announced. The second Wireless Tech Field Day is sure to be full of great technical presentations, and will gather the best and brightest minds in the wireless engineering work-space!

Q. Tell us about the Wireless Tech Field Day you got involved with this year.

Wireless Tech Field Day was the first wireless focused Tech Field Day event. Previous Tech Field Day events have focused on Virtualization, Storage, or general Networking. I attended the first Networking Field Day event, and immediately began hatching plans to make a Wireless Field Day event a reality.

The Wireless Field Day brought together Aerohive, AirMagnet, Cisco, Fluke Networks, HP and MetaGeek as event sponsors to present their technology offerings to the extremely knowledgeable delegates Marcus Burton (@MarcusBurton), Samuel Clements (@samuel_clements), Greg Ferro (@etherealmind), Rocky Gregory (@bionicrocky), Tom Hollingsworth (@networkingnerd, Chris Lyttle (@wifikiwi, Matthew Norwood (@matthewnorwood), George Stefanick (@wirelesssguru), Andrew vonNagy (@revolutionwifi) and Steve Williams (@stevewilliams_).

Everyone learned a lot from the sponsors, each other and many blog posts were written to share the event information with the rest of the wireless community on the web. Here’s a group photo from the event:
