Are you ready to be number 5,080? Ready to take your career to the next level? Ready to prove your Server 2008 leadership and problem solving skills?

Great! Now let’s see what you’ll need to become a MCITP certified Server Administrator.

How To Become a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)

MCITP: Server Administrator

The MCITP Server Administrator certification will help you develop and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in working with Server 2008 and prepare you for several different roles including:

  • Windows Server Administrator
  • Server Systems Administrator
  • Monitoring Operator
  • Network Administrator

The MCITP certification builds on a combination of MCTS (Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist) prerequisites that will allow you to develop your technical skills and knowledge and prepare you for your role as a Server Administrator.

In preparation for your MCITP you will learn how to:

  • handle day to day management of the server os, file structure and directory services
  • handle software distribution and updates
  • monitor servers
  • troubleshoot servers
  • configure the server
  • implement an auditing policy
  • peform scheduled vulnerability assessment scans

How to Earn Your MCITP: Server Administrator Certification

There are three exam requirements for the MCITP Server Administrator certification:

The first two exams are MCTS prerequisite exams that I mentioned above and the third is a Professional Series exam.

How To Become a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) - 1

How to Upgrade to the MCITP: Server Administration Certification from MCSA or MCSE

If you have your Windows Server 2003 MCSA or MCSE certification, you can choose an upgrade path instead and take two exams instead of three.

To upgrade your Server 2003 MCSA you will need to pass:

How To Become a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) - 2

To upgrade your Server 2003 MCSE you will need to pass:

How To Become a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) - 3

By taking the first exam (either 70-648 or 70-649) you will be able to earn multiple MCTS certifications on Windows Server 2008 (shown in the diagrams above) and be only one exam away from your MCITP Server Administrator Certification.

I would like to undertake training of Windows Server 2008. I have servers in my offices and can patially actually manage them. Howeever, i would like to have a professional certicate on Microsoft Servers.

How can I go about this? How long would lit take me to study this course?

    Hi Joseph,

Congrats on making the decision to certify! My suggestion would be to start with one (or both) of these certifications:

    - Server 2008 Active Directory Exam 70-640
    - Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Exam 70-642

Both of these cover the basics that every admin working with Server 2008 should know. They will get you to a good start and will prepare you for more advanced study. By passing the exams you will be earning your MCTS certifications, but these two exams are required for the more advanced MCITP certs. It’s really the most logical place for you to begin.

Here’s more information on these 2 exams specifically:

    - 70-640: http://www.trainsignal.com/blog/server-2008-active-directory-configuring-exam-70-640-certification
    - 70-642: http://www.trainsignal.com/blog/server-2008-network-infrastructure-exam-70-642

And here’s our training for the two exams (which includes free Transcender practice exams):

    - Active Directory Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-Server-2008-Active-Directory-Training.aspx
    - Network Infrastructure Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-Server-2008-Network-Infrastructure-Training.aspx

Now as far as how long it will take you to prepare, well that really depends on how much time you put into it. If you take an hour every day to watch videos, go through practice exam questions and practice what you learn on your test servers, then you can get through the courses and pass the exams relatively quickly. We’ve had students tell us they were able to complete our training and get certified in a matter of weeks. So keep this in mind when you’re studying and you’ll do great.

And feel free to ask questions and join us in conversation on our support forums: http://forums.trainsignal.com/

    Good luck with your studies!

iv completed my 3 MCITP examinations early this year, but still unemployed….WHATS DE POINT?

  23. Post Author
Posted by Kasia Lorenc on August 1, 2011, 4:55 pm

    NTOMBI,

I’m so sorry to hear that… but you know, certifications are just a piece of the puzzle. Hiring managers are looking for a lot more than just certifications; the certs are great to get you in the door, but you need to make sure that you have experience to back up your knowledge, soft skills to show you can work with people and you need to make sure you’re the right fit for the company you’re applying to.

Take a look at our IT Career Help section for more information on how you can get the job you want: http://www.trainsignal.com/blog/it-career-help

And let us know if you have specific questions on how we can help. Find out why you didn’t get the jobs you’ve applied for, ask the hiring managers what you’re missing and then work on improving those areas. You’ve done the hard part — you got the certifications under your belt — now all you need to do is polish up your other qualifications.

  24. Posted by Kclexa on August 4, 2011, 12:33 am

    Dear Author,
I don’t intend to be negative minded here but i really know how frustrated NTOMBI could be at the moment.

I am a UK Graduate of Computer network management and also a graduate of Computer engineering (Two IT Degrees).
In order to show my drive for IT, I went on to get two Cisco certification and a Microsoft certification. Point to note I attended Cisco network Academy as well. So I really put in my best to know the IT stuff.

But after all this dedication, effort and money what do I get in return?
HR guys telling me I need experience even when the position I applied for, is an Entry level positiion.

The big question comes into play; WHERE EXACTLY WOULD I GET THE SO CALLED EXPERIENCE IF I CAN NOT GET AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB WITH ALL MY QUALIFICATIONS?

I have ended up working a year as a sales adviser where I only needed a GCSE to apply for the position and presently I am a warehouse assistant manager of which my manage only has a GCSE.

    So do the Maths!!!

    Hi Kclexa,

You raise an excellent issue, it’s the catch 22 of the IT worker:

    No Experience = No Job
    No Job = No Experience

I can’t even imagine how frustrated you must be after completing two degrees and multiple certifications and STILL not being able to qualify for entry level positions. This isn’t right, you have the knowledge so why are you not qualified?

On the other hand, I can understand where hiring managers are coming from. They’re looking at knowledge (education + certifications) as part of the requirements. To them experience counts more because they want people who will be able to do the job and the best way for them to know that is if you have the right experience.

I know this doesn’t help you, so let me offer my advice.

There are a number of ways you can get experience in the IT field that will help you fill up your resume and show prospective employers that you do have the right experience:

    - Internships — whether paid or unpaid, they get you the experience and references you need to get a job.

    - Consulting — find people you know that need help; maybe someone you know has a small business that needs to setup an email server or a wireless network.

    - Volunteering — look for local organizations that need IT help but can’t afford it and help them out with their IT needs for free.

    - School projects — maybe some of your school projects can count as experience. Talk to your professors and see how they can help you turn your school work into relevant experience.

Remember, you’re looking for the experience, something to put on your resume, something that will show hiring managers that you’re capable of doing the job. They’re not interested in how much you got paid for your work or if the work you did counted as a real job, they just want to know that you can do the work — and that’s what you need to show on your resume and during your interview.

Again, I’m so sorry to hear that after all the hard work you’ve put in to getting your education you can’t find a job… but hang in there. Your college degrees and certifications will pay off in the long run.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with additional questions and perhaps in the future, some suggestions for other IT professionals in a similar situation as yours. And let us know if there’s anything we can do to help!

    Best Regards,
    Kasia

    Hi Festus,

Congrats on your MCITP Server Admin! The MCITP Enterprise Administrator certification requires a total of 5 exams (2 of these you already have through your MCITP Server Admin cert):

    1. Exam 70-640 (Active Directory Configuration)
    2. Exam 70-642 (Network Infrastructure Configuration)
    3. Exam 70-643 (Applications Infrastructure Configuration)
    4. Exam 70-647 (Enterprise Administrator)
    5. And one of these exams:
    – Exam 70-620 (Windows Vista Configuration)
    – Exam 70-624 (Business Desktop Deployment) — note: this exam retired on 10/31/2010
    – Exam 70-680 (Windows 7 Configuration)
    – Exam 70-681 (Windows 7 and Office 2010 Deployment)

So in addition to 70-647 you’ll need the 70-643 and one of the desktop client configuration or deployment exams.

Here’s an article that outlines the differences and requirements for the MCITP Server Admin and Enterprise Admin certs: http://www.trainsignal.com/blog/mcitp-server-administrator-vs-mcitp-enterprise-administrator

And don’t forget, we have training for all of these exams:

    Exam 70-643 Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-Server-2008-Applications-Infrastructure-Training.aspx
    Exam 70-647 Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-Server-2008-Enterprise-Administrator-Training.aspx
    Exam 70-620 Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-Vista-Training.aspx
    Exam 70-680 Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-7-Administration-Training.aspx
    Exam 70-681 Training: http://www.trainsignal.com/Windows-7-Deployment-Training.aspx

Let me know if you have any other questions! Best of luck on your MCITP EA!

It looks like Microsoft Learning has a pretty thorough FAQ here : http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/help/self-help-faq.aspx

You may have to download them digitally, or contact a regional support center if there some other sort of issue: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/help/assisted-support.aspx

    I hope this helps.

    Hi all.

I would love to do MTIP server admin. What i’ve read is that the best way to achieve this is through lab practice. What if you don’t have access to a lab? I have A+ and a bit of Networking experience.

Would you recommend me starting Exam 70-640 and then Exam 70-642?

I might get access to a VM machine. Would I be able to pass the exams without a lab?

    thnx for your advice guys

I would like to know what publications/sites all of you (IT professionals) read and where you learned about all of the certifications.

    Just doing some research.

    Thanks.
