It seems these days that the marketing mastermind known as Apple is reaching everyone.
For those of you with TIVO (who haven’t seen a commercial in the last 4 years), Apple’s “switch” marketing, seen every 15 minutes, has been so successful it even converted head of the Vista Development Team (and soon to retire) top Microsoft Exec, Jim Allchin. In an email to Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates, Allchin stated that if he didn’t work at Microsoft he’d buy a Mac. What?!
Well, there is a little more to this than just the out of context quote that is spreading across the internet like wildfire. Allchin is an outspoken executive that has been known for making brash comments to drive his points home.
This definitely falls into that category. In the email from a couple years ago he was trying to emphasize the need for change in the development of the upcoming Vista OS …

One good point this brings up with the changing laws about saving emails and their uses in lawsuits and investigation we might all think about taking a step back and considering what is said in work emails prior to sending them as the email media has become a staple in communication both for serious work related topics and for humorous releases. The only problem is when viewed by an outsider there variation between the two can be difficult to determine.
Personally I’ve always been a proponent for a sarcasm warning button or universal sarcasm formatting to be included in all instant message and email programs.
