  • Course Introduction
  • Exam Objectives
Lesson 2 - Microsoft Access: The Back Story

If you’re reluctant to use Access because you’ve heard that Access is not a very good program, then this is the video for you as I attempt to explain how Access has acquired a "bad reputation" among some IT professionals and explain how learning the basics of the program will save you time in the future.

  • Introduction to Relational Databases
  • Relational vs. flat-file
  • Most Important thing to remember: Access is NOT Excel!
  • The General Order for Building Databases
  • The Scenario for the course
  • Building a database for Picaroon Publishing Unlimited, a small literary press, to keep   track of employees, customers, orders, authors, and more.
Lesson 3 - Welcome to Microsoft Access 2007

This is a video for newbies and experienced users alike as I take students on a tour of the new Access 2007 interface. Just like moving to a new town, taking the time initially to learn where the grocery store or the hospital is will save you valuable time ""driving around"" in the future.

Lesson 4 - Introduction to Microsoft Access Objects

Designed for complete beginners to building a database, I walk the student through each of the basic MS objects that make-up a database. Becoming familiar with these objects is essential to the overall design process. This video is the ""birds-eye"" view of everything we will be designing and building in Access. So, if you are like me and must know where you are going before you go there, you’re going to appreciate this video.

  • Types of Basic ObjectsTables
  • Queries
  • Forms
  • Reports
  • Getting Familiar with Basic Views in Access
  • Datasheet View
  • Design View
  • Form View/Report View
  • Pivot Table View

Lesson 5 - Designing a Database

An essential video for anyone new to constructing databases, I walk students through the whole design process from conducting a ""Needs Analysis"" and gathering data to building a table structure and deciding how far you will need to normalize your data.

  • How NOT to Design a Database
  • How to Design a Database
  • Normalization (Basic Overview)
  • Our Scenario
  • Our Plan
Lesson 6 - Building Tables

This is an essential video for anyone who hasn’t yet built a table. Using the plan we created in the ""Designing a Database"" video, I walk students through table basics and demonstrate all the different ways you can create a table in Access 2007.

  • Scenario: Build Tables to store company data for Picaroon Publishing Unlimited
  • Building a Table from Datasheet View
  • An Brief Introduction to Naming Conventions
  • Overview of different Data Types

Lesson 7 - Modifying Tables

There are a lot more to tables than just building them. Here I show students the more advanced features of constructing tables and controlling data entry.

  • How to Control Data Entry
  • Creating Input Masks
  • Using Validation to restrict data entry
  • Creating Lookup Fields
  • Using the Access Find and Replace Dialog Box
  • Sorting Data in Access
  • Filtering Data in Access
Lesson 8 - Building and Modifying Tables: Extra Practice

If you are like the vast majority of the population and need to be shown how to do something more than once, then this is the video for you. Since tables can be a confusing topic for beginners, I walk students through the creation of ALL the tables we will be using throughout this course. No magic here, just building from the ground up.

Lesson 9 - Creating Relationships

Once tables are built, they are going to need a way to ""talk"" to each other. Here, students will learn about the various types of relationships as well as the various ways of connecting data inside Access.

  • Creating a One-To-One Relationship
  • Creating a One-To-Many Relationship
  • Enforcing Referential Integrity
  • Turning on the Cascade Update Feature
  • Turning on the Cascade Delete Feature
  • Creating a Subdatasheet
  • Entering Information
  • Viewing information
Lesson 10 - Advanced Relationships

Here I discuss some of the data limitations that can occur when builders rely on only the basic relationship types (one-to-one and the one-to-many). Then we go through how to build two slightly more advanced relationships in Access, the many-to-many and pass-through relationships.

  • Building a many-to-many relationship
  • Creating Multiple Keys
  • Building a Pass-through relationship
Lesson 11 - Query Basics

Once you put data into Access, you’ll occasionally want to visit that data - you’ll need a query for that. Here, I’ll show you the basics of building a select query.

  • The purpose of queries
  • Types of queries
  • Creating a Select Query
  • Using the Query Wizard in Design View
Lesson 12 - Finding Specific Data Using Queries

As your database grows, you’ll find it rare to want to see ALL of your data all at once. To limit your query results, you’ll need to use a little something called ""criteria."" Here I’ll show you everything you could possible want to know about criteria and operators.

  • Introduction to Criteria
  • An Introduction to using Operators
  • Mathematical
  • Relational/Comparison
  • Logical
  • String
  • Other
  • Using Wildcards
Lesson 13 - Creating Flexible Queries

Flexibility is a quality I admire about people and MS Access. With parameter queries, you can design one query that will output or retrieve multiple data results based around user input. With parameter queries, you can save your end-users time and give them the choice of what data they want to see when.

  • Benefits of a using flexible query
  • Creating a flexible query
  • Using Wildcards with a flexible query
Lesson 14 - Creating Calculations Inside Queries

Creating calculations is essential for many aspects of data analysis, manipulation, etc.; however, you can also use built-in functions to override table formatting options, data normalization, and output. Here I introduce students to creating their own custom calculations and show them how to use popular built-in functions.

  • Introduction to Calculations
  • Creating a Calculated Detail Field
  • Calculating a Group of Records
  • Introduction to Built-in Functions
  • The DateDiff Function
  • Format Functions
Lesson 15 - Introduction to Query Joins

Most times users to Access use queries to see data that exists in their database. Sometimes, though, users want to see data that doesn’t exist in their database. You’ll need to know how to change the join type for that.

  • Introduction to Query Joins
  • Creating an Inner Join
  • Creating an Outer Join
  • Creating a Self Join
Lesson 16 - Intro to Action Queries

Rather than just having your query show you something, you might want to have your query do something, like build a new table or add records to an already existing table. In this video, I show students how to make queries work for them by demonstrating how to build various action queries.

  • Creating an Append Query
  • Creating a Delete Query
  • Creating a Make-Table Query
  • Creating an Update Query
Lesson 17 - Using Special Query Wizards

In addition to building queries yourself, Access provides you with several wizards that are designed to perform very specific tasks. In this video, I’ll show students how to use some special query wizards, such as the crosstab query wizard.

  • The Crosstab Query Wizard
  • The Find Unmatched Query Wizard
  • The Find Duplicates Query Wizard
Lesson 18 - Creating PivotTables and PivotCharts

  • Creating a PivotTable
  • Modifying a PivotTable
  • Formatting a PivotTable
  • Creating a PivotChart
  • Modifying a PivotChart
  • Formatting a PivotChart
Lesson 19 - Creating Basic Forms

If your database will have multiple hands inside your Access cookie jar, so to speak, you’ll need to find a way to make your database more accessible to end-users. Forms are the way to go! In this video, I show students the basics of creating user-friendly forms.

  • An overview of Form Views
  • Creating Forms
  • Using the wizard
  • In design view

  • In layout view
  • In design view
  • Adding Special Tools
  • Adding Images to forms
  • Creating an Option Group Control
  • Creating a Calendar Control
  • Creating Command Buttons
Lesson 20 - Designing Macros

  • Creating a Macro
  • Adding a macro to form control
  • Embedded Macros
  • Controlling Data through Macro Conditions
  • Building a macro to run automatically
Lesson 21 - Creating Basic Reports

You won’t want your data to simply exist on a computer. At some point, you’ll need to print the data in order to hand it over to someone else. In this video, I’ll show you several methods for creating reports that will impress.

  • Creating Reports
  • Formatting Reports
  • Adding Calculated Fields
  • Sorting and Grouping Data
  • Exploring Printing Options
  • Adding a Chart to a Report
Lesson 22 - Creating a Switchboard

When your database is close to being complete, you’ll need to build a switchboard to help end-users locate the reports they use the most. That way, end-users won’t go exploring and break something they shouldn’t be able to see in the first place.

  • Creating a Switchboard
  • Editing a Switchboard

"Any TrainSignal Lab that has Heather Ackmann's name on it, I will make a point of getting..."

I purchased my first TrainSignal Lab over 3 years ago and the Access 2007 Lab is the only one where they have told a fib. The brief says 18 hours 2 minutes and 25 seconds of video tutorials however with the smooth information packed delivery and the easy to listen to style of Heather I believe it seems more like 22 hours of instruction.

Of the 35+ TrainSignal Labs I have, this is undoubtedly the best one to date that I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Heather presents this Lab in a way that is logically progressive and while this is the same for all the Labs I have, Access 2007 has just that bit more oomph to it. The smooth and easy to listen to delivery is what I believe packs in the seemingly extra 4 hours of tutorial information.

I had never used Access because is just seemed too hard and too complex. Heathers teaching expertise has simplified how to use Access and removed this blinkered view that I should never have had. Any TrainSignal Lab that has Heather Ackmann's name on it (hackmann, what a logon name eh) I will make a point of getting because I know just how good it will be even before reading what the Lab will be about.

I use PowerPoint, but already I am looking forward to the new and unknown features Heather will be teaching me about it.

"TrainSignal products not only teach me how to maintain my network, I actually gain understanding that is invaluable for the tests as well..."

I just wanted to send in my thanks. It’s really nice to have a product out there for net admins that really delivers.

Everyone else seems to brag about how you can use their products to pass a test. I've taken and passed several tests, and few contained the content I need on a day-to-day basis.

TrainSignal products not only teach me how to maintain my network, I actually gain understanding that is invaluable for the tests as well. I bought your product at my previous employer and will buy it for my current employer as funds become available.

Though your product is amazing, I would like to make one request that I feel would complete the package. Most admins are clueless when it comes to scripting.

Everyone seems to have tons of advanced scripting, but just like everything else, there are little to no explanations for the beginner. Could you please consider adding something in that area to your training? Keep up the good work.

Thanks

"Its like having a Veteran walk you through training camp, building your confidence so you know what it takes to get it done."

Just want to say great job by you and the team on the training videos. The videos and the lab books trail each other so you align the image of it being done with the instructional reading. Its like having a Veteran walk you through training camp building your confidence so you know what it takes to get it done.

If your goal is certification then partner the video with test questions and you will solidify the knowledge from the video in your mind for the test and while really getting to know your craft!

"I shall continue to buy your products without a question of a doubt."

Moreover, I find your service absolutely excellent and I feel totally appreciated as a customer. I shall continue to buy your products without a question of a doubt.

"...the best paying job of my IT career. Your videos had a big part in that..."

I wanted to let you know I was asked today (3/16/2007) to provide references for a Network Engineer position at a large world-wide law firm. Providing references is typically the last step before an offer. This potentially could be the best paying job of my IT career. Your videos had a big part in that.

I have two and half years experience with Active Directory and Exchange 2003, but your videos showed me just what I needed to pass their skills assessment test. The price was well worth it.

"You guys have a unique ability to explain and visually demonstrate these esoteric topics in a way that is easy to understand..."

I just wanted to let you know I have been very impressed with the orders we have placed with you.

Last year we bought the Microsoft Server Complete Library. It is one of the best I have seen.

You guys have a unique ability to explain and visually demonstrate these esoteric topics in a way that is easy to understand.

I have attended many training classes where I was getting good information but because of the way it was taught I had to force myself to pay attention and in some cases just try not to fall asleep.

These videos are just the opposite. If I am not careful I will sit up too late watching them. Well, we just received our most recent order. This time we decided to order all of your VMWare Videos. If they are as good as your other work then I know I'm going to be happy.

Thanks for the help and keep up the good work.

"I will recommend TrainSignal to all of my tech buddies..."

I wanted to write and express my great satisfaction with the Exchange Server 2003 for SophiesToyBox.com. I am very impressed with the course. I felt as though I was actually performing the tasks during the course.

Scott was great at explaining things and even going through the quirks that would surely happen during an install. I am very pleased with the material and plan to be back to purchase more. Great job. I will recommend TrainSignal to all of my tech buddies.

William R. Cunningham (Reggie) Systems Administrator, Institute for Safe Medication Practiceswww.ismp.org
"I am on my way to becoming an MCSE and have found your videos very informative. However, your service deserves even more praise."

I inadvertently ordered two of the same course on Routing and Remote Access and when I discovered my mistake, I was very upset.

Internet based companies are often hard to deal with. If you try to return something, they put you off -sometimes indefinitely. I was almost sure that I would encounter problems when I attempted to exchange the video.

I called Ashley on the phone and informed her of my intent to exchange the duplicate video for another. She told me that she would send the other video when I returned mine.

I sent the video back by UPS and within a few days I received a package with the new Active Directory tutorial movie. I was so impressed that your company did not try to hold the movie hostage or to delay sending it. Even though I am an avid supporter of technology, I have to agree with those who say that the age of impersonal commerce has opened doorways to poor service.

I hope your company is successful and that others realize the benefit of doing business with someone they can trust!

Sincerely,

Nancy Ashley Ware
"I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know..."

Just to let you guys know I received my order this morning. Extremely happy with the fast delivery service, since I ordered the product on Tuesday afternoon and I received them Thursday morning (48hrs delivery from the US to the UK, that puts to shame some mail order companies in the UK) I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know.

"I highly recommend your products and I buy every new release that comes out."

I would like to say that I have had many “live” classes in everything from MCSE to CCNA and your classes are as good or better. You can play the CDs over and over or go back and review something that you did not really understand the first time.

I highly recommend your products and I buy every new release that comes out. Please keep up the great work!

"Your way of running business is a rare example..."

There truly is power in a good name and a way of running business. Good impressions and positive experiences with a company definitely affect how people think when they think of your name - in this case, TrainSignal.

All that is to say thank you and that I will truly enjoy the material. I have studied all the other many hours diligently and will continue on my certification path.

You guys are doing it right; it's great to take part in your program and business.

"TrainSignal Courses equals Instant Experience!"

TrainSignal's Excel 2007 Lab is the Rolls Royce of training at Ford prices. This Lab has been created for the novice who has no idea what a spreadsheet is, to the Advanced User who wants to quickly know about the new features in Excel 2007.

Bill took me through Excel 2007, explained all the basics and later showed me where to find all these new features and how to apply them. If you are an Excel Power User or a regular user like me, then you too shall find this TrainSignal Lab the cheapest and easiest way to become an expert in a single weekend.

Now that I have finished the Excel Lab, my High School daughter has stolen the disc from me so she too can learn about Excel 2007 the easiest way possible. TrainSignal Courses equals Instant Experience!

"I highly recommend your training to others, it is portable, affordable, and very informative."

How can I thank you. I have been working for Bear Stearns for 20 some years and we were acquired by JP Morgan Chase.

My whole group was not retained and so now I will be looking for employment within 3 months.

I have purchased 10 of your products to help reestablish myself. The training is great. I am currently studying with the VMware training course now.

I highly recommend your training to others, it is portable, affordable, and very informative. Most important is that if you are faced with a new learning curve you can go home use Trainsignal and be prepared the next day to tackle that situation

Again I thank you. Keep up the good work.

"...the real advantage is being able to watch them over and over again."

It is difficult for me to take time away from the office, so watching your training videos has kept me up with this fast moving industry.

Besides being able to watch the videos at my convenience, the real advantage is being able to watch them over and over again. This insures a thorough understanding of the subject material. I have already watched Vista, Exchange 2007, Sharepoint 2007, and Microsoft Access 2007.

With confidence, I have taken the skills that I picked up from watching the videos and put them into practice.

I find TrainSignal a great product, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

I give it a rating of 5 out of 5.

Thanks,

"...I have found the training very informative and not at all boring..."

Recently I have needed to do a lot of retraining, both on Windows Servers and Now MS Access.

My first exposure was to the Small Business Server 2003 video which I borrowed.

Because I found this training so good (and I had looked at a number of other suppliers) there was no doubt that when I was looking for Access training I would choose your training. Again I have been very pleased with the training in this DVD and am looking forward to getting down to the nitty grities of building a Database again.

Specifically, I have found the training very informative and not at all boring (as evidenced by a number of other companies.)

As to recommending TrainSignal training to others, that goes without question.

I will be looking forward to seeing you produce something for MS Dynamics CRM as that is where the company I work for is setting there sights for the future.

Regards,

Donald Barker
"The videos are clear, concise, and above all, professionally correct."

Hi all TrainSignal People,

I just wanted you to know that I found your training videos by going to http://www.petri.co.il/. This site highly recommended your videos so I decided to take the plunge. I am so glad I did.

The videos are clear, concise, and above all, professionally correct.

We have videos on Exchange, DNS, DHCP, Outlook 2007, Excel 2007,Cisco, Access 2007 and of course the free Windows Server 2008 essentials. I have used the Exchange, DNS, and DHCP videos to enhance my knowledge of network systems and to fine tune our own systems.

I rate your videos at a (out of 5) because they are that good. Just yesterday, at a technological conference in Knoxville, I met a guy who was just starting out in IT. He asked me what sort of training should he invest in to really learn the network systems he was currently being asked to managed. I told him to look at TrainSignal because he would be impressed by the quality of the training.

Thanks and happy 6th anniversary,

Bob Andres Network Systems Manager, National Safe Skies Alliance
