Lesson 5 - Getting to Know Network Monitor

This lesson explains which machines to take the network capture from and why you need to document what you are troubleshooting as well as what you find in the network captures as you find the information. Sometimes it can be helpful to customize exactly what is captured, how the data is displayed in Network Monitor and how to find the data packets you are really looking for. Some of Rhonda’s favorite tips and tricks are in this lesson like filtering out information you don’t need and easily identifying the packets and data you are looking for.

  • Where to Take the Capture
  • Creating a Cheat Sheet
  • Customizing What is Captured
  • Customizing the User Interface
  • Making Sense of the Captured Data
  • Adding Even More Information
  • Viewing Specific Frames
Lesson 6 - Making Sense of Your Data

In real world scenarios network monitor traces can get really big really fast. So sometimes finding the data packets that contain the clues necessary for troubleshooting seems incredibly daunting. Lesson 6 is all about finding the packets that contain those clues. You’ll discover the fine art of filtering which allows you to find the exact data you need to accomplish your troubleshooting. Beginning with the default filters and learning how to create your very own custom filters and saving them to be used in all your network captures. In fact, you’ll find out how to color code your data and just how easy it can be.

  • Getting to the Bottom of the Capture
  • Finding the Data
  • Filtering Expressions
  • Building Custom Filters
  • Looking at the Built-In Filters
  • Creating and Saving Your Filters
  • Adding Color to Your Filters
  • Adding Comments
Lesson 7 - Core Protocols

Network monitor is all about troubleshooting network protocols. In this lesson you’ll learn some of the basic networking protocols such as the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) which is how computers refer to each other on the network. Next, you’ll find out how Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) clients get their IP addresses and how other services can sometimes masquerade as DHCP servers when they really don’t have any IP addresses to hand out. We’ll finish this lesson with the protocol that allows you to map network drives in order to access data on network servers - Small Message Block (SMB2.0) also referred to as Common Internet File System (CIFS).

  • Converting IP Addresses to MAC Addresses via Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
  • Getting an IP Address from the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
  • Other Services that Masquerade as DHCP Traffic
  • Monitoring DHCP DORA Traffic
  • Monitoring DHCP Renew IP Address Traffic
  • Monitoring DHCP and WDS Traffic
  • Connecting to Other Machines Using Small Message Block (SMB)
  • Monitoring Drive Mapping Traffic
Lesson 8 - Practical Troubleshooting of DHCP

In this lesson you’ll learn some of the issues you can run into with DHCP and learn how to recognize and resolve them via network traces.

  • What DHCP Should Do
  • Not Being Able to Contact the DHCP Server
  • DHCP Service Disabled
  • DHCP Server Has No IP Addresses to Hand Out
Lesson 9 - The Big Daddy of Network Protocols: Domain Name Services (DNS)

What can be more basic on a network than DNS. This lesson begins with a basic DNS query, the kind you use every time you type www.Microsoft.Com or any other internet address. Then we’ll dive into Microsoft DNS and the different types of DNS zones that can be created and the type of traffic you can expect from each. If your new to DNS you’ll also learn quite a bit of new terminology and what it means - this is a power packed lesson!

  • Anatomy of a DNS Query
  • Terminology of a DNS Query
  • DNS Query Example
  • Flushing DNS Cache
  • Primary DNS Zones
  • Secondary DNS Zones
  • Start of Authority (SOA)
  • Stub Zones
Lesson 10 - Advanced Features of DNS

This lesson gets into the nitty gritty advanced settings of DNS and what they look like in network traces. You should know where to take the network captures from, sometimes it takes more than one trace to get the big picture. But it can also be difficult to follow the data packets from one trace to another. This lesson will show you how to follow a packet of data from one trace to the next.

  • Forwarding a DNS Query
  • Conditional Forwarding
  • DNS Forwarders Traffic
  • Setting Up Conditional Forwarder
  • Recursion
  • Netmask Ordering
  • Round Robin
Lesson 11 - Miscellaneous Network Monitor Features

This last lesson covers some of the coolest Network Monitor features. Find out how to use the command line version of Network Monitor for scripting solutions. And for those times when you’re not at work and bad things happen; wouldn’t it be nice to have a network trace of what happened and which machine / process created the problem. Meet nm3eventcap for those times when you’re not there and still need to get a network trace. Last but definitely not least, Microsoft has created some special tools called “Experts” that you can run on any network trace you’ve captured to reveal massive amounts of data that could take you weeks to figure out - just a couple mouse clicks and you can find out which protocol or user is hogging all the bandwidth or decrypt encrypted network packets to get inside the packets and read the data.

  • Command Line Network Monitor
  • Using NMCap
  • Customize Your Captures
  • Custom Command Line Captures
  • Using Help for NMCap
  • Windows Events and Captured Data

"I will recommend TrainSignal to all of my tech buddies..."

I wanted to write and express my great satisfaction with the Exchange Server 2003 for SophiesToyBox.com. I am very impressed with the course. I felt as though I was actually performing the tasks during the course.

Scott was great at explaining things and even going through the quirks that would surely happen during an install. I am very pleased with the material and plan to be back to purchase more. Great job. I will recommend TrainSignal to all of my tech buddies.

"I am on my way to becoming an MCSE and have found your videos very informative. However, your service deserves even more praise."

I inadvertently ordered two of the same course on Routing and Remote Access and when I discovered my mistake, I was very upset.

Internet based companies are often hard to deal with. If you try to return something, they put you off -sometimes indefinitely. I was almost sure that I would encounter problems when I attempted to exchange the video.

I called Ashley on the phone and informed her of my intent to exchange the duplicate video for another. She told me that she would send the other video when I returned mine.

I sent the video back by UPS and within a few days I received a package with the new Active Directory tutorial movie. I was so impressed that your company did not try to hold the movie hostage or to delay sending it. Even though I am an avid supporter of technology, I have to agree with those who say that the age of impersonal commerce has opened doorways to poor service.

I hope your company is successful and that others realize the benefit of doing business with someone they can trust!

Sincerely,

Nancy Ashley Ware
"I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know..."

Just to let you guys know I received my order this morning. Extremely happy with the fast delivery service, since I ordered the product on Tuesday afternoon and I received them Thursday morning (48hrs delivery from the US to the UK, that puts to shame some mail order companies in the UK) I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know.

"You guys have a unique ability to explain and visually demonstrate these esoteric topics in a way that is easy to understand..."

I just wanted to let you know I have been very impressed with the orders we have placed with you.

Last year we bought the Microsoft Server Complete Library. It is one of the best I have seen.

You guys have a unique ability to explain and visually demonstrate these esoteric topics in a way that is easy to understand.

I have attended many training classes where I was getting good information but because of the way it was taught I had to force myself to pay attention and in some cases just try not to fall asleep.

These videos are just the opposite. If I am not careful I will sit up too late watching them. Well, we just received our most recent order. This time we decided to order all of your VMWare Videos. If they are as good as your other work then I know I'm going to be happy.

Thanks for the help and keep up the good work.
