In this video you will meet your instructor and gain an inside view on his passion for Exchange and his experience in working with it for over a decade. In addition, you will begin the immersion process into the precarious world of data redundancy, resiliency and recovery as we prepare your mind to handle both minor and major recovery issues in the world of Exchange 2010.

Lesson 4 - An Overview of Disaster Recovery

In this video we will look at recover from a 100,000 foot overview that includes basic understanding of RAID levels and backup methods. You may already know much of this information if you have studied up on Server features but we need to lay the groundwork to ensure you are ready to apply that knowledge specifically to Exchange.

  • Resiliency, Redundancy and Recovery
  • Review of RAID Concepts (RAID 1)
  • Review of RAID Concepts (RAID 5)
  • Backup Types

Lesson 5 - Storage Architecture and Backup/Recovery Basics

In this video we take your knowledge of backup and recovery and begin the process of looking into Exchange 2010. First of all, if you truly want to be able to recover your data, you need to understand the storage architecture in Exchange. That may sound deeper than it is, but ultimately we are looking at how Exchange takes an email and puts it in a database, and the steps along the way. Then we will discuss some best practices and theory with those databases, along with an understanding of Exchange provides some built in resiliency to help you avoid having to restore from a backup (because that is the LAST thing you really want to do). We will finish up this lesson with some high level overviews of Exchange recovery methods.

  • Scenario: Second Half of DREC Review Sessions
  • Storage Architecture
  • Database Best Practice Suggestions
  • Deleted Retention Times and the AD Recycle Bin
  • Backup and Recovery Basics
  • Client Deleted Items
  • Deleted Mailbox Retention and Active Directory Recycle Bin
  • Windows Server Backup Review
  • Database Portability
  • Using a Recovery Database (RDB)
  • Dial Tone Portability
Lesson 6 - Windows Server Backup

In this video we discuss, in-depth, the free Windows Server Backup tool that comes with Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Through this free tool, small to mid-size companies can backup and restore their Exchange databases, if they know how. We are going to walk through the simple process of backing up a database and restoring it to the same location. In addition, we will discuss the ability that Exchange has to recover a lost server through the Setup /m:RecoverServer command for internal Exchange server roles. We will finish up the lesson going over the ability we have to clone an Edge Transport server for resiliency.

  • Scenario: St. Giro's Golf Course
  • Windows Server Backup Review
  • Backing Up the System State
  • Installing Windows Server Backup
  • Performing a Backup with Windows Server Backup
  • Performing a Restore with Windows Server Backup
  • Restoring an Exchange Server
  • Steps for Recovering an Exchange Server
  • Recovering an Exchange Server Demonstration
  • Clone an Edge Transport Server
  • Cloning an Edge Transport Server Demonstration
Lesson 7 - Item and Mailbox Recovery with Windows Server Backup

In this video we divert our attention away from disaster on the grand scale and bring it down to disaster on the individual level. Sometimes mail is deleted. In fact, sometimes an entire mailbox is deleted. And even though we have retention times that can help us for a time… they don’t last forever. So, it is necessary to know how to use those backups you’ve been taking and hoping never to use… and use them. Sometimes it is easier to restore an entire database than have to go digging around a backup looking for the email someone absolutely must have back. But it’s all part of the job right? So, this lesson will show you how to use the free Windows Server Backup tool to recover those deleted emails and mailboxes in a pinch.

  • Scenario: St Giro's Golf Course
  • Creating the Database
  • Deleted Items and Mailbox Retention Times
  • Email Database Backup
  • Deleting Emails from User Mailboxes
  • Create a New Recovery Database
  • Create a New Folder for Backup Data
  • Check Database Health with ESEUTIL Tool
  • Copy Database into Recovery Database Location
  • Restore-Mailbox cmdlet
  • New-MailboxRestoreRequest cmdlet
Lesson 8 - Dial Tone Recovery with Windows Server Backup

In this video we are going to look at the need for speed when thinking about getting your users up and running fast with their email again. In the event the Exchange server (or servers) are still functioning and you have the ability to create a new database on one of them, you can get your people sending and receiving email in minutes, not hours, through a dial tone restore. However, they will not have access to their production email until you restore it from backup and make a swap-merge play with the dial tone database. Sounds complicated? It is… but won’t be after you watch this lesson.

  • Scenario: Completing St. Giro's Training
  • The Behind the Scenes View
  • The Process
  • Restoring to a New Database
  • Create a New Dial Tone Database
  • Rehome Mailboxes
  • Mailbox Recovery from Outlook View

  • Create a New Recovery Database
  • Copy Recovered Database into Recovery Database Location
  • Swapping the Dial Tone Database with the Recovery Database
  • Merging the Dial Tone and Recovery Databases
Lesson 9 - Data Protection Manager Setup

In this video we consider another solution from Microsoft that provides continuous data protection (CDP) called System Center Data Protection Manager. This is light years ahead of traditional backup solutions and requires an education on the terms and concepts used in DPM as well as information on how to install this solution in your environment.

In this video we are going to look at the ins-and-outs of working with DPM. This is going to initially revolve around configuration of a storage pool, installing agents and a creating protection groups. Then we will take a look at how DPM protects our data and how we can work with it in times of a restore.

Lesson 14 - Replacing Backup/Recovery with High Availability

In this video we are going to see the future of recovery. What if you never had to recover because your data was always available? Granted, in extreme circumstances you might lose the ability to continue working, but your data would have redundant replicas both near and far that allowed you to sleep sound at night because you knew you could get people back to their data with minimal effort. That is what Microsoft and others have done by eliminating the need for a traditional backup solution and working with Exchange Server’s database availability group (DAG) solution. In this lesson we will show you how it is done! You may never need to back your Exchange up again!

"I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know..."

Just to let you guys know I received my order this morning. Extremely happy with the fast delivery service, since I ordered the product on Tuesday afternoon and I received them Thursday morning (48hrs delivery from the US to the UK, that puts to shame some mail order companies in the UK) I will be happy to recommend your products to anyone I know.

"I highly recommend your products and I buy every new release that comes out."

I would like to say that I have had many “live” classes in everything from MCSE to CCNA and your classes are as good or better. You can play the CDs over and over or go back and review something that you did not really understand the first time.

I highly recommend your products and I buy every new release that comes out. Please keep up the great work!

Thanks,
